Lying in Wait : Book Review

Title: Lying in wait
Author: Liz Nugent
Genre: Psychological Thriller

Lying in wait is one of those thrillers that starts off with a punch, ebbs, calms and picks up pace again. It feels like going on a bumpy ride.

A successful and reputed judge kills a girl named Annie by accident. His wife Lydia is privy to it and they bury her body in their mansion. Their son Laurence discovers this secret. The plot then spirals into a series of events that leads to discovering more secrets and skeletons in the closet.

The book is written in first person narrative from the points of view of Lydia, Laurence and Annie’s sister- Karen. The plot delves deep into the disturbed past and parallel narratives of the characters. It touches upon the themes of coming of age, social class disparities, relationships and marriages.

There is good amount of tension with twists and turns to keep the readers hooked. Some of the instances make you question the motives of the characters. It’s definitely dark and disturbing. There is a sort of an unsettling feeling that you experience as you turn the last page of the book.
