A girl’s longing for her mother
A small story keeping the Mother’s Day theme in mind..
"Its mothers day on Sunday. Let's make a card for our mothers shall we?" she heard her teacher announce to the class. Her downcast face was a contrast to the bright expressions on her friends’ faces, as they brought out their colors and papers.
Reluctantly she got out hers too and stared at the blank page. She recollected that beautiful face surrounded with a mass of black curls as those brown eyes looked at her lovingly. She remembered that beautiful silvery voice that sang rhymes to her. She reminisced that warmth which engulfed her into a hug when she was tucked away to sleep. One fine day she woke up to an empty bed, her mother’s warmth conspicuous by her absence. "You mother has gone out for a few days," she was told.
The six year old girl couldn't understand what happened. The kitchen was taken over by a pleasant faced matron who churned out her meals. The silence was deafening without her mother's effervescent chatter. It was the same silence that greeted her that day when she returned from school. At nights, she ached for her mother's warmth. She glanced at the drawing that she had made of her mother in class earlier that day. A tear rolled down her cheek as she snuggled the pillow and cried herself to sleep.
The entire Saturday turned out to be a gloomy day. Her father had left somewhere and she was alone with the matron. The sky exhibited a dull grey as the rains gently fell on the roof. A grey mist had formed outside the window. She spent the entire day staring at the card that she had made for her mother while the rain continued to pour incessantly.
As the clock struck six, the front door opened. In walked her dad accompanied by someone. Gone were the mass of black curls and her face portrayed a frail look. The brown eyes looked tired and yet she recognized that voice that called out to her. She glanced at her drawing and looked at the person in front of her. She instantly smiled and rushed towards her, feeling the warmth that she had missed for days. Her mother was back.
The rain had stopped outside and the clouds began to dissipate, giving room to clear skies.
