The Great Indian Escape: movie review

Watching movies about the escapades of the Indian army always instills a sense of pride. It is also accompanied with a myriad of other emotions.

I happened to stumble upon this movie on Amazon Prime.

The Great Indian escape is the true story of three Indian Air Force Officers who become POWs (Prisoners of war) and how they plan their escape from Pakistan. Under the lead of LT Dilip Parulkar, they meticulously plan for almost a year  in order to escape their hellish life in Pakistan Jail.

The film is a wonderful ode to their heroic feat. The display of their positivity, grit and valor even during times when they were flirting with death, is just amazing. One can learn from their ability to see light at the end of the tunnel. Irrespective of how dark and long the tunnel is. It teaches one to learn to thrive on hope. Something that is relevant today, given the current situation.

There are no frills or fancies or any earth shattering dialogues in booming voices. Neither does it have a big star. Probably thats what gives this movie that raw honesty and authenticity. The film also transports you back in time to an era which was devoid of the internet. Hand written letters were the main medium of communication and were considered prized possessions.

There have been a couple of films based on the 1971 war. One was Border and another was the Manoj Bajpai starrer 1971.

Like most films based on the armed forces, The Great Indian escape guarantees goosebumps.
