Angrezi Medium: Movie review

'The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams'.

This quote was the first thing that came to my mind when I watched the Irrfan Khan starrer Angrezi Medium on Friday night.  What a beautiful film!

It's the story of Champak-a humble sweet shop owner and how he goes lengths to fulfill his daughter Tarika's dream of wanting to study abroad.  During this journey, a series of misadventures occur. Right from being barred from entering UK, to gaining entry through a false identity, a run into a stern cop (played by Kareena Kapoor) to fundraising for Tarika's admission.

It also exhibits a young girl's ambition to break the shackles of her cocooned life in Rajasthan and lead an independent life. As she categorically tells her father "I don't want to be a frog in a well."The instances that showcase her eagerness to fit into the society is typical of a 20 twenty person striving to yearn acceptance amongst the peer set.

It also emphasizes on the importance of strengthening bonds and relationships. The camaraderie between Champak and his buddies evokes both tears and laughter. So does his roller coaster one with his daughter. Or Kareena's strained relationship with her mother (Played by Dimple Kapadia).  The movie subtly indicates that the grass only seems greener on the other side.

Some great performances. Irrfan Khan is always a pleasure to watch onscreen. His effortless acting makes him stand apart from his contemporaries. He has proven it time and again, be it in films like The Namesake, The Lunchbox or movies like Life in a Metro or Hindi Medium. The film also has some fine performances by Deepak Dobriyal and Ranveer Shorey who are his buddies.

Endearing and heartwarming, Angrezi Medium tugs the heartstrings. The father-daughter bond especially evokes a lot of emotions. A film that is a must watch.
