Little Women: Reliving the classic through the reel world

I had read this classic by Louisa May Alcott as a little girl. It was wonderful to see all the characters coming to life in the reel world.

Set around time of the civil war, Little Women is a coming of age story of 4 sisters-Meg, Jo, Beth and Amy. It showcases their trials and tribulations while each of them try and pursue their own dreams. Each of the 4 March sisters showcase a distinctive quality about them.

Meg thrives on domesticity that includes a happy marriage with kids in tow. Jo March is feisty, independent and an aspiring writer. Someone who seeks a life and identity beyond marriage and kids. A tomboy by nature, she has no time for frills or fancies. Beth is slated to be the peacemaker and one with a penchant for music. Amy loves painting and yearns to be a part of the elite society.

With their father is away at war, these 4 women live with their mother.  Together they deal with the challenges that come their way. Amidst the quarrels, spite, jealousy and Beth's illness, they stick together as a family. In the meantime, Meg, Jo and Amy also deal with the complexities that occur in their married and love lives.  Particularly resonated with the character of Jo March.

The film goes back and forth in time which could confuse the viewer if they haven't read the book.  A couple of instances differ from the book.

The part where Jo sells her hair reminded me of O Henry's 'The Gift of the Magi'.   It doesn't start with the usual "Christmas isn't Christmas without presents." No doubt the family strived hard to make ends meet and couldn't afford presents. Yet they had one valuable gift-the ability to stick together as a family. Its something that is quite rare these days.

While the book had more depth, the movie made a pleasant watch!
