The Honey bus: A bittersweet ride

Title: The Honey bus
Author: Meredith May
Genre: Memoir
The Honey bus is a true story of a little girl from a broken home who finds unexpected solace in bees.
Meredith is five when her parents get divorced. She and her brother find themselves under the care of their grandparents in California. Her grandad comes from a family of beekeepers who makes honey is a rusty old bus.
When Meredith is introduced to the extraordinary world of bees, she is amazed to learn about their lifestyle and dynamics. She finds refuge in the honeycomb world as a getaway from her harsh reality of a rather neurotic and violent mother and a strict grandmother. From these tiny creatures, she learns about relationships, loyalty and the art of survival.
Poignant, insightful and informative, it was interesting learn about the remarkable influence of bees on humans. Showcases the marvel of nature and its ecosystem where even the tiniest species make their mark in the world.
The book also showcases an endearing relationship between a girl and her grandfather. It sort of reminds one of Johanna spyri’s Heidi which deals with a similar genesis.
Themes of family, grief, healing and forgiveness are dealt with here. Bittersweet, powerful and uplifting, The Honey bus is a book that will stay with you for a long time.
