Bell Bottom : Movie review

The last time I watched a movie on big screen was sometime in February 2020. It was the Oscar winner-Parasite. After which of course the world had practically shut down. All my source of entertainment was restricted to Amazon Prime and Netflix. While all the viewing was within the comfort of my home, I missed the special effects, the popcorn and just being in a different environment. So it was a treat to go back to the movie hall and watch a slick spy thriller.

I must however admit that a movie with a title like Bell Bottom did leave me with apprehensions. And the couple of latest releases of the lead actor turned out to be a disappointment. However the synopsis and the reviews erased whatever little doubts I had.And I ended up enjoying a well made film with some salted-caramel popcorn.

The movie is based on true incidents. Its set in the 80s when India faced the challenge of the occurrence of several plane hijacks. Bell Bottom chronicles the journey of Raw Agent played by Akshay Kumar. He goes by the code name-Bell Bottom. While the Prime Minister Indira Gandhi is angry about these hijackings and trying to negotiate with the Pakistani Government, Bell Bottom has other ideas. Driven by a personal motive and duty towards the country, he and his team aim to pull off an impossible mission. We see glimpses of other characters-his love interest played by Vain Kapoor and an air hostess played by Humans Qureshi.

One thing that struck me about the characters was the fact that none of them were really wasted or used as just an arm candy. It was interesting how each one of them provided an interesting twist to the story. The stellar performances is another USP of the film, particularly that of Lara Dutta's as the former woman Prime Minister of India. She gets into the skin of the character to an extent that she is barely recognizable. It almost feels like its Indira Gandhi in the film. Akshay of course plays the Raw agent to the hilt. Such roles are tailor made for him which brings out the suavity and subtlety in his performances. Personally I'm a a fan of the actor and its a delight to see him grow as an actor and induce immense energy into his work. He should do films like this, Special 26, Baby and Rustom. It tends to remind one of Baby and even Naam Shabana where he makes a fleeting guest appearance. Huma Qureshi is good is her little fleshed out role and so is Vaani Kapoor.

The pace in the initial half is a little slow but picks up pace gradually. The direction is slick and the movie could do without the songs. The action sequences keep you hooked to the seats. Every twist and turn in the plot piques your interest enough to claim your undivided attention for those two hours. Bell Bottom has its share of emotional quotient. The death of the mother of the protagonist, the numerous hijacks that put families of the passengers in jeopardy and distress. It instills that fear, anger and helplessness. Bell Bottom no doubt takes you through a roller coaster ride. Gripping and engaging, it was a treat to watch a good flick after a long time.
