'Chillar Party': Every Dog has its day
Themes like comedy and action have always ruled the roost. Crime and thrillers seem to be making their own mark along with a few artistic films which are categorised under 'Intelligent' Cinema. It is a rarity among Indian film makers to make a Children's movie linked to that of a social cause revolving around an animal. This is something many Hollywood filmmakers have explored.
UTV productions' Chillar Party is a film centred on a group of kids in a colony and how they fight against the municipality to save a stray dog. The film starts off with an introduction to the several characters present in Chandan Nagar Society. Funny nicknames accompany the kids and the adults too are presented in a quirky manner. Calling themselves ‘Chillar Party’ their mischief would cause exasperation among the grown-ups. One fine day a young orphaned lad enters the colony along with his dog Biddu. After the initial bullying and apologies, Chillar Party and the dog become thick friends.
One fine day, the local minister is attacked by Biddu which causes the former to ascertain a rule of getting rid of all the stray dogs in the city. Chillar Party try in vain to get a certificate in favour of Biddu but their efforts go in vain. Determined to save Biddu from the clutches of the municipality, they go to the extent of marching across the streets of Mumbai in their underwear. Managing to catch the media and public attention, a great battle begins. The last scenes exhibit simple sayings from the Value Education text books which we have heard so often yet fail to incorporate. Phrases like ‘A friend in need is a friend in deed’ traces one back to their own school days. After a heart-warming discussion, Chillar Party emerges as a winner as they welcome Biddu with open arms.
Chillar party showcases what is absent in the modern era-the feeling of compassion. One hears of crime and cold blooded murders on a daily basis. Film makers are also keen on making such crime dramas as a part of their production. With such murky elements prevailing in the society, Chillar Party proves to be a delightful affair. It emphasizes the fact that Dog is man’s best friend. Elements like loyalty, friendship and companionship are showcased in the film. It makes one realize that pets/animals are a cause worth fighting for. A sweet film which will make you laugh and cry at the same time.
