Panga: Movie review
It’s always wonderful to see a sports film especially one that revolves around women’s Kabaddi.
Panga is the story of a woman/ ex Kabaddi player, who gives up her dreams of playing in a major Kabbadi tournament due to family responsibilities. Instigated by her son and husband, many years later, at the age of 32, she attempts to revive the sport.
Its a well made film that takes you through the challenges faced by mothers in maintaining that balancing act. Making a comeback is never easy. Especially when you are competing with players younger than you. The lack of practice over time makes you rusty and slow-almost like a ghost of your old self.
Panga resonated with me in many ways. I could relate to the torn feeling between responsibility towards your family and at the same time finding your identity. I am a mother/wife by default. However, who I really am is defined by partly my profession and my inherent abilities. The pursuit for this identity is what made me relentlessly go after the Ironman 70.3 title when I landed in the Bay Area 2 years ago. The difference of course, being that Kangna plays for country while mine is just a recreational sport.
Having said that, the film showcases how sports can ignite that spark in you and make you find a purpose in life. I personally know many women in the running and triathlon community who juggle between several tasks and manage to make time to train. Its challenging.
Panga depicts the staunch family support that enables the Protagonist to pursue her goals. While she defies stereotypes and handles those unpleasant taunts even by the team captain, it is pleasant to see immense support displayed both by her husband and son.
Another importance aspect showcased in this film is the spirit of sportsmanship. This clearly comes across in the scene where Kangna says that its more important for her team to win the cup than her getting a chance to play.
Its always a pleasure to watch good acting on screen. Kangna is a fine and a feisty actress who takes the role by the reins. Whether its Queen or Panga, she bowls you over with her performances. Well directed with no unnecessary melodrama, Panga is an endearing and a delightful watch.
Its nice to see a game like Kabaddi gain prominence. Due to the craze of cricket, sports like Hockey and Kabaddi are almost forgotten.
Sports buffs especially will love this one!
