Book Review
Title: Salvation of a Saint
Author: Keigo Higashino
Genre: Fiction/Translation/Murder Mystery
Salvation of a Saint is one of those intriguing and complex murder mysteries which doesn’t involve gun shots or those frantic car chases. It’s a moderately paced cerebral detective story which keeps the readers hooked and is definitely a page turner.
A man is found dead in his home. His wife becomes the prime suspect. Yet she was miles away the night her husband was murdered. The body was found by the wife’s student cum friend. Police note down a couple of suspect and begin their investigations. The main detective seems to be besotted by the wife but must keep his personal feelings at bay during investigation and judgement calls.
While readers get a fair idea about the killer, it’s interesting to see the mystery slowly unravelling like peeling off layers of an onion. It’s more of a case of how and how why the murder was committed. The plot also indulges into the idiosyncrasies of the characters, the complexities of the human mind and relationships. As outlandish as some of the instances may be, that’s probably what makes it interesting to read.
