Kashmir-The Colour of Paradise

We just got back from Kashmir after a week's holiday. As we set foot there it was nothing but breathtaking beauty that welcomed us.

We visited Srinagar first and had a wonderful experience of residing in a Houseboat and a Shikara ride on Dal Lake. We got a glimpse of the lovely Mughal gardens which were blooming with flowers of different kinds. It made us realize why the Mughal emperor Jahangir called it the land of Eternal Spring.

We also visited places like Sonmarg, Gulmarg and Pahalgam. Each place was beautiful in its own way. These places offer horse riding options. Gulmarg possesses the highest cable car in the world which takes you up 13000 ft above sea level. It is also known for winter sports like skiing and ice-skating.

We learnt a lot during this trip. We met the Kashmiri locals who yearn for more tourists to visit their wonderland. The past political turbulence has affected Tourism to a large extent. However it’s extremely safe now. And we met the Indian army Jawans as well who assured us that the present condition of Kashmir embarks improvement.

It made us wonder why many people did not visit this Paradise. It’s true that Kashmir faced a lot of trouble in the past. The mere mention of this place evokes fear and terror. Even as we were leaving on this trip there were several statements like ‘Be Safe’ which came our way. It makes one to sit down and realize that there is an element of risk and danger present in each and every place. Be it man made terror or natural calamities. The latter in fact is worse as it cannot be controlled, whereas the former can be countered by sophisticated weapons and not to mention the Jawans who would give their life for the country. Japan was hit by Tsunami, yet it doesn’t deter people from making travel plans there. Christchurch in New Zealand was affected by a massive earthquake, yet that didn’t deter from a person whom we knew travel there. Most importantly Mumbai is known to be terror prone. Yet people continue to live here. So why single out Kashmir alone?

It’s time for people to unleash their fears and visit this paradise. One look at Kashmir will make one forget Austria and Switzerland instantly. As Firdaus the poet rightly said “If there is Heaven on Earth, it is here, it is here and it is here.”

Note: Will be writing a travel article on each of the places separately. Watch out for them.

Whatever you say one cannot enjoy a vacation if one has to look behind the shoulder always.Care free and secure atmosphere are essential prerequisites for a tourist spot. While Japan and New zealand were affected by natural calamities, the deterrent in Kashmir is man made and the concomitant fear factor.True Mumbai was affected but it is not as frequent as in Kashmir.
However your safe trip brings certain assurance and relief for undertaking a tour to that paradise on earth. It is only tourism that gives the place its bread and butter.
I am looking forward eagerly to your travelogues.

Hi Swetha, you've described Kashmir and the things related to it beautifully. I totally agree with you. My mom and dad planned to visit Kashmir recently, but I was the one to discourage them coz Im worried bout their safety.
Sometimes I guess man made dangers are more dangerous than natural calamities...though God forbid any may occur. We humans do things unreasonably , though nature strikes once due to a reason.
May God keep all of us safe and Happy!
It's great that you got to meet the soldiers, yes they do sacrifice their life willingly for the nation!
Hope peace prevails ALWAYS!
